Owner, Cindy Powell brought Kukui’s Hawaiian Shaved Ice to the downtown shopping district of Shipshewana, Indiana in 2010. The business originally operated out of a mobile concession cart its first summer.
Kukui’s moved to a brick-and-mortar location in March 2011, offering both indoor and outdoor seating.
Cindy decided to open her business after experiencing Hawaiian shave ice for the first time while on vacation with her husband in Kauai, Hawaii. They visited the well-known JoJo’s Shave Ice in Waimea, and they fell in love with the creamy, refreshing treat at first bite.
Cindy decided that she needed to bring shave ice to her neck of the woods. It’s not too often that you see shave ice in the mid-west, let alone in an Amish community. Her indoor location allows her to offer other tastes of Hawaii including Kalua Pig pulled pork. (Kalua Pig is served at Hawaiian luaus). All her lunch and snack items offer a bit of a tropical island twist making Kukui’s the place to go for a little taste of Hawaii in the heart of Amish country.
